We have now completed
an aluminum mini tug based on the Berkley
Engineering "Candu-EZ" design. We started
this some years ago to fill in between other work and are only now
returning to this project. The length was increased by one foot in
the middle section to give more room in the cabin. A keel was fitted
to be wide enough to accommodate an 11 horsepower Universal diesel
engine, putting weight low and giving an almost level line for the
propeller shaft. This allows it to be fitted within a box under
the helm seat. About 4 horsepower is required to produce hull speed
of 4 knots, there should be sufficient power to semi-plane at 6
knots plus. As this vessel is under 6 meters it must comply with
those regulations such as positive floatation which is contained
under the side decks, the bow and stern lockers and under the cockpit
sole.

Keel with shaft log and engine beds.

Shaft log faired into aft end of keel with cutless bearing housing.

Bottom plate welded together with chine round bar and keel tacked
in place

Side plates are continuous from bow to centre of transom and rubrails
and sheer pipes are one piece from amidships either side.

Note engine well and engine bed for 11 hp Universal diese.l

Aft section has 4" deep framing which raises up the cockpit
floor to make it self draining. Bouyancy foam was later fitted under
this section.

Bottom is now completely welded with two rubbing strakes that serve
as longitudinal stiffeners and one as a keel cooler for the engine.
As the engine will have a dry exhaust this eliminates any water
intake.

Bottom is primed with International Interprotect 2000 epoxy primer

International Trilux 2 antifouling over the primer

Rebuilt Universal model 15(5411) 11 horsepower diesel engine. This
is a marinised Kubota engine coupled to a Hurth gearbox with a 2:1
ratio.

Engine fitted with dry exhaust and cooling by a keel cooler
